He is an internationally recognised expert in the management of prostate cancer and is passionate about improving outcomes through clinical research and trials.
Professor Jain specialises in the treatment of prostate cancer using advanced radiotherapy techniques, including stereotactic radiotherapy. He is an expert in the insertion of gold fiducial markers and peri-rectal spacers (Barrigel, SpaceOAR Vue) to help reduce the side effects of radiotherapy. He also treats patients with systemic therapies, including novel hormone treatments such as relugolix, abiraterone, and darolutamide. He has extensive experience in active surveillance and uses advanced imaging techniques, such as PSMA PET-CT, to aid in accurate staging when needed.
Originally from the North West of Northern Ireland, Professor Jain graduated in Medicine from Queen’s University Belfast in 1999. After completing specialist training in Oncology, he undertook an international fellowship at the University of Toronto, focusing on prostate cancer. He has been a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre, Belfast Trust, since 2012 and was appointed Professor of Clinical Oncology at Queen’s University Belfast in 2020.
As an innovator in his field, Professor Jain has led efforts to reduce treatment side effects and improve outcomes for men with prostate cancer. He performed several first-in-Northern-Ireland procedures, including transperineal prostate biopsies, transperineal fiducial marker insertions, and the first use of SpaceOAR and Barrigel. He introduced HDR brachytherapy for prostate cancer and stereotactic radiotherapy for both prostate cancer and oligometastatic disease. He leads multiple clinical trials involving drug and radiotherapy treatments and serves on national and international trial management groups.
Professor Jain is a former Chair of the Irish Radiation Research Society and currently serves as Co-Director of the FASTMAN UK Prostate Cancer Centre of Excellence. He is also Co-Director of the ProEx Prostate Cancer Centre of Excellence in Belfast. He has been an invited member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Genitourinary Guidelines Development Group, the UK National Cancer Research Institute’s prostate cancer clinical studies group, and the Northern Ireland Cancer Network radiotherapy clinical reference group.
He has published widely in leading journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Oncology, and Journal of Clinical Oncology. He is also deeply committed to educating and mentoring the next generation of oncologists, particularly those with a passion for academic oncology.
