Barry Clements qualified from QUB in 1985 with Honours. He enjoyed a productive and distinguished undergraduate and postgraduate career winning multiple prizes and he has written in excess of 100 research publications and two books. During completion of an MD under Professor Brian Rowlands he was awarded a Surgical Infection Society Fellowship of North America for research into the Pathophysiology of Obstructive Jaundice in 1992. Notably this was the first time this Fellowship had been awarded outside the United States. He was appointed through the Woolfson Foundation of RCSE as the inaugural UK laparoscopic Fellow under the Tutelage of Professor Michael Bailey in 1995 at the Minimal Access Therapy and Training Unit, Guildford. In 1996 he completed higher professional training in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in complex HPB surgery and Liver Transplantation. He remained a mentor and trainer on Laparoscopic Faculty’s in the MATTU, Guildford, Hamburg and Elancourt. Barry was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon with a Specialist interest in Upper GI Surgery to the RVH in 1997 and remained there until his retirement from the NHS in 2023. Since that time he remains active in the independent sector practicing an array of laparoscopic and open surgery. He maintains his academic interest reviewing research articles and remains an Examiner with the Joint Intercollegiate Examination Board for Surgeons sitting their exit exam.
